Surface Water Management District Invites Residents to Explore Local Streams Through Hands-On Summer Events

Jun 3, 2026 - Summit County, OH

The Surface Water Management District (SWMD), in partnership with Summit Soil and Water Conservation District (Summit SWCD) and local communities and park systems, is inviting residents to dive into their watershed this summer through a series of interactive macroinvertebrate sampling events.

Hosted at three locations across the District’s service area, these free, family-friendly events offer a unique opportunity for participants to explore local streams and uncover the story of water quality hidden beneath the surface. Staff will be on-site during each event to guide attendees through the sampling process and share their expertise.

Macroinvertebrates, small aquatic insects and organisms, serve as key indicators of stream health and are used by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to assess water quality. Sensitive species, such as mayflies, are typically found in clean, healthy waterways, while more pollution-tolerant organisms thrive in stressed environments. During the events, participants will help collect and identify these organisms to better understand the condition of local streams.

Stormwater runoff remains one of the most significant factors impacting water quality. As rainwater flows over pavement and compacted surfaces, it carries sediment, nutrients, road salt, and other pollutants directly into waterways. These events will also highlight simple, everyday actions residents can take to help protect streams, including reducing fertilizer use, picking up pet waste, and planting native vegetation.

All events are free and open to the public, with no registration required. Attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately and be prepared to get wet while exploring the stream environment.
