Immediate Closure – Bolanz Road Bridge Between Riverview Road and Akron Peninsula Road

Oct 20, 2026 - Cuyahoga Falls, OH

The Summit County Engineer’s Office is announcing the immediate closure of Bolanz Road over the Cuyahoga River between Riverview Road and Akron Peninsula Road to allow for further inspection of the bridge. The closure is being implemented out of an abundance of caution to ensure the continued safety of motorists.

The Engineer’s Office recently received a report of a pothole on the bridge from the City of Cuyahoga Falls. The County’s maintenance team responded to address the concern, and the subsequent assessment determined that additional inspection of the bridge would be necessary before vehicle traffic could safely resume.

The bridge is a prestressed concrete box beam structure, a design that can present unique challenges when inspecting bridge decks. The additional inspection will allow engineers to better evaluate the bridge’s condition and determine whether further action is needed.

The outcome of the additional inspection is not yet known. Depending on the findings, the closure may be temporary or may need to remain in place for a longer period while the appropriate next steps are determined. The Engineer’s Office will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Detour Information

  • Northbound traffic: The detour will use Ira Road, to Riverview Road, to State Route 303 (as Akron Peninsula Road is also closed in this area.)
  • Akron Peninsula Road: Southbound traffic will remain open to Northampton Road. Beyond Northampton Road, access will be restricted to local traffic only.

Motorists are asked to follow posted detour signs, allow additional travel time, and use caution when traveling through the surrounding area.

The Summit County Engineer’s Office appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation as crews and engineers work to assess the bridge and help keep Summit County’s roads safe.
